See, communism and a centrally-planned economy has some positive side-effects. Stalin built them to compete with NY's subway system. And he also commissioned 8 skyscrapers to commemorate 8 centuries of Russian statehood. Only 7 were ever built and they are quite prominent on the Russian skyline. One is the Hotel Ukraina, where I stayed when I was in Moscow.
